Trooper Godfrey was 22 years old when he was killed on the battlefield of El Alamein on Oct 24 1942. A fellow of the Warwickshire Yeomany, Godfrey was among the 200,000 Commonwealth soldiers fa off against 150,000 German and Italian forces in that ferocious final desert battle of the North Africa Effort of the Second World War.
El Alamein was at that continually a desolate watering station, 177km from the cosmopolitan pivot of Alexandria.
